- from our Industry Survey -

Strong Interest by Log, Sawmill and Lumber Companies to Learn Better Methods to Control and Track Inventories

In our Survey of the Inventory Control methods of Logging, Saw mill and Lumber companies a number of companies told of problems using a Manual method - without the aid of Log Tags or Labels, or Barcode or Numbered Tags and Labels.

A number of companies wanted to know more effective ways to Control and Track Inventory to improve their profits, and requested a copy of our Research with companies using these methods.

Analysis of the Interviews of Companies That Have Not Used Log Tags in their Inventory Control

Overview:
Eight companies were interviewed in this Category.
They range in size from a single location to as many as 10 locations.
The 8 companies interviewed answered our question about the number of Board Feet they process giving a wide range – one stating 3 million and another 100 million Board Feet per year.

The largest of the companies interviewed, with 10 locations – is doing everything by hand with markers. They were definitely interested in learning more and wanted to get a copy of the results of our research to review the ideas in it.

Noticeable also was the interest showed by a company with 3 locations and 100 million Board Feet processed per year. Although they are not using Tags or Scanners, they were very interested in getting a copy of this research containing the methods and ideas from other companies that are using Inventory Control.

Inventory Control System

None of the companies we spoke with in this category had an Inventory Control System. One company used a Spray System and other companies told us they counted when then bought, and then estimated.

Priorities for These Companies in Controlling and Tracking Inventory
Quality and Service were mentioned by one company.

The company that is processing 100 million Board Feet per year, doing everything by hand with markers, gave the following detailed answer for their priorities:

1. Controlling Inventory - Volume control -This includes both consumption and inventory.
2. Daily Inventories
3. Accuracy - he said that he believed their current system was pretty accurate – but was eager to learn about the methods other companies were using.

Another company, doing 2.5 to 3 million Board Feet per year, with plans to grow, gave the following as their priorities:They said errors can occur with estimating. They are currently only looking at batches versus a reliable system of inventory control.

Any Shortcomings or Things They Want to Add to Their Manual Method of Controlling and Tracking Inventory
Most companies saw no shortcomings – a few however, were quite clear in saying that “estimating” was not accurate - and that there were also problems in relying on counting batches.

Another company, interested in improving, said: “Their system is very slow and labor intensive.”

One other company detailed the problem they have with estimating, saying: “If they only get 1/2 way through a run, that means that they have to count all of the logs in
order to know their inventory” - which they said is a shortcoming to their method.

At another company, an accounting assistant told the owner they were “having problems keeping track of their inventory.”
